ABOUT NISSAN REISHI

Nissan Reishi is a safe and reliable health food made in Japan with reishi mushrooms cultivated and processed in Japan.

What is reishi?

The Japanese word reishi is derived from the Chinese name for Ganoderma lucidum, a mushroom of the Ganodermataceae family. The native Japanese term is mannentake, while in English the species is referred to by the Chinese name lingzhi—meaning “miraculous mushroom”—or as bracket fungus or shelf fungus.
According to ancient Chinese legend, the reishi was one of a set of living things, including the qilin and the dragon, which descended from heaven when the Emperor enacted a virtuous policy. Of all naturally occurring things, it was considered supreme as a good omen. The Shennong Ben Cao Jing (Classic of Herbal Medicine), an ancient book said to have been compiled under the Later Han dynasty (25–220 A.D.), classifies a large number of natural substances as “upper” “middle” or “lower” herbs according to their physiological action. The reishi is allocated to the first of these three categories as a substance that assists in the maintenance of health.
The reishi appears to have reached Japan too at an early date. Featuring in both the Nihon Shoki (Chronicles of Japan) of 720 A.D. and the Honzo Wamyo of 918 A.D., which is Japan’s oldest book on medicinal herbs, it was known as a mushroom variety that promoted health.

A food tradition we respectThe lore of our health-seeking ancestors

Featured in the ancient Nihon Shoki, the reishi has been consumed by the Japanese for health reasons for over 1,300 years. In China, meanwhile, it has a history going back over 3,000 years. This “food tradition” illustrates that the reishi is unequalled as a health-giving mushroom and is a safe foodstuff. However, that does not mean that just taking reishi is enough in itself.
The fact that the reishi has been consumed for many years is just part of the food tradition, which encompasses a whole range of knowledge, such as how our ancestors selected reishi for consumption according to the environment they grew in, what preparation methods they used, and what quantities they consumed.
To enjoy reishi as a prime health food, we at Nissan Chemical believe that we should enjoy them according to the same food tradition as our ancestors.

Traditional reishi meets non-traditional cultivation and extraction methodsHealthy insights from ancestral lore to benefit modern lifestyles

From among the many reishi varieties, our ancestors selected the “red reishi”, which they sliced and boiled then drank as a tea.
From cultivation to extraction, Nissan Reishi is produced using methods that rigorously preserve tradition.
Nissan Chemical cultivates red reishi on logs inside dedicated greenhouses. Naturally, we use organic fertilizer rather than agricultural chemicals.
Just as with the traditional method, we perform hot water extraction of the sliced whole mushroom, a method that does not involve chemical extraction of specific constituents only. This is because we believe that the goodness of reishi does not lie in any specific constituent but rather depends on the combined balance of all of its constituent substances.
The amount that our ancestors drank in the form of tea was equivalent to 2 to 3 grams of mushroom a day. Nissan Reishi consists of a powdered essence in tablet form that allows reliable and convenient dosing with the daily equivalent of 3 grams of mushroom.
In this way, we have used modern technology to recapture the wisdom of our ancestors.
